Dusk loosens the day’s last thread,

a dim hush settling over Southampton.

The church stands still,
white boards breathing warmth,
steeple lifted into the thinning blue.

Clouds drift apart like tired curtains,
revealing a sky rinsed clean of hurry.

In each window, a candle...
small, steadfast,
a quiet bloom against the cold.

Their glow gathers on the snowless ground,
soft as a remembered hymn,
gentle as a hand on the shoulder.

Light meeting dusk,
gold meeting blue
and for a moment,
the world pauses
in the tender hold of evening.
